President Donald Trump on Monday indicated to “Fox & Friends” that he has an ulterior and personal motive to secure a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine to end their war: He wants to get into heaven.
“If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s a pretty — I want to try and get to heaven, if possible. I’m hearing I’m not doing well,” the president said in a phone interview in the morning, prompting wry chuckles from the Fox News hosts. “I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”
Trump has taken some criticism in recent days for seemingly abandoning attempts at negotiating a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine following his Friday meeting in Alaska with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Critics contend a ceasefire is needed as soon as possible in advance of any long-term peace negotiations, which Russia wants to include the carving out of Ukrainian territory.
“I just want to end it. I want to edit it,” Trump said to “Fox & Friends” in the interview. “We’re not losing American lives, we’re not losing American soldiers. We’re losing Russian and Ukrainian, mostly soldiers — some people as missiles hit wrong spots or get lobbed into cities like Kyiv and towns.”
