“I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognize my country”: Angelina Jolie reflects on the state of the U.S.

Angelina Jolie said at Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival on Sunday that while she loves the United States she does not “recognize my country.”

The Oscar Award-winning actor was speaking at a panel at the film festival to promote her new film, “Couture,” when a reporter asked her what she fears as an artist and an American. The question came in the wake of recent crackdowns on free speech in the U.S. and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension. While she carefully chose her words, Jolie alluded to the precarious moment:

“Anything, anywhere, that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous,” she said. “These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So, I’ll be careful during a press conference, but … these are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”

Jolie has appeared in several films owned by Disney, which has taken heat from celebrities after its network, ABC, took Kimmel’s show off the air. ABC made the move hours after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened regulatory punishment. Kimmel last week poked fun at President Donald Trump for bringing up the construction of his White House ballroom in response to a question about how he’s mourning Charlie Kirk’s murder. The comedian also said on his show the “MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize” Kirk’s shooter as “anything other than one of them.”
