President Donald Trump appeared to diminish domestic violence while touting his takeover of D.C. and claiming that crime in the capital has been “virtually” eliminated at an event announcing his new “America Prays” initiative on Monday.
During a speech at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, Trump said that the city was now a safe-zone.
“There’s no crime. They said crime is down 87%. I said no, no, no, it’s more than 87%. [It’s] virtually nothing,” Trump said. “Things that take place in the home, they call crime. You know, they’ll do anything they can to find something. If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime, see? So now I can’t claim 100%.”
Per accounts, Trump’s first wife, Ivana, said in a sworn deposition during their divorce proceedings that the now-president yanked out handfuls of her hair and raped her. She later walked back the claim.
Trump’s comment also comes as D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department quietly closed a domestic disturbance case against Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida after Trump took control of the D.C. police force in August as part of his unprecedented move to combat alleged rampant violent crime in the city.
