Rudy Giuliani walks into court for defamation trial

Rudy Giuliani, who was the mayor of New York City and then President Donald Trump’s lawyer, arrived in a Washington D.C. court today for jury selection in a civil case about him falsely accusing two Georgia election workers of fraud during the 2020 election.

In the wake of the election, while attempting to keep President Biden from being certified as the winner of the 2020 election, Giuliani showed lawmakers surveillance video of mother-and-daughter election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss working at their posts counting ballots and said that they were “quite obviously surreptitiously passing around USB ports as if they’re vials of heroin or cocaine.” This was found to be untrue.

He has already been found liable of defaming the two women, who suffered harassment and threats because of the unfounded conspiracy theories Giuliani helped circulate in the wake of Donald Trump’s defeat. The jury will simply determine how much money he owes in damages.

Giuliani is experiencing many kinds of fallout from his aggressive conspiracy theorizing after the 2020 election results, including having his license to practice law suspended in the state of New York, and a lawsuit from another lawyer saying Giuliani still owes him over a million dollars in legal fees for his investigations into ways to keep Donald Trump in the White House. In a separate defamation lawsuit about the election, this one filed by voting machine company Smartmatic, Giuliani’s lawyer said the former mayor was “close to broke.”
