The pope has spoken … against some of Trump’s hardline policies.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Pope Leo XIV offered support for the Chicago Archdiocese’s now-failed plan to honor Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his work on immigration reform.
It was announced that Durbin will decline the award following backlash from the Catholic community over his support for abortion rights.
“Someone who says I’m against abortion but says I’m in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life,” the pope said when asked about the backlash to the plan to honor the senator. “Someone who says that I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants who are in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
It’s not the first time the American pope has weighed into political and cultural debates. In his first media interview, the pope said “we’re in big trouble” when it comes to the ever-widening pay gap between the rich and poor, and cited Elon Musk, who may be on track to become the world’s first trillionaire.
