Ohio Rep. says Charlie Kirk was killed because we don’t teach enough Christianity in U.S. history books.

For this Ohio Republican Rep. Gary Click, Charlie Kirk was killed because we don’t teach Christianity enough in our history books.

“Our history books talked about our Christian origins, the Christian heritage here in the United States of America,” Click said on the state House floor Tuesday. “But … historic facts have been omitted. They have been left out. And history is being rewritten. And that leads to, I think, a lot of hate. I think it leads to violence.”

Click was pushing his bill, “The Charlie Kirk Heritage Act,” which would allow public schools to teach the positive impacts of Christianity. The bill suggests possible lessons, such as Christianity’s influence on the Pilgrims’ arrival, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, as well as the Ten Commandments’ impact on American law.

The Constitution requires the separation of church and state, and experts generally agree public schools cannot promote one religion over another in lessons, but the bill’s sponsors contend the legislation would not violate the First Amendment. A growing cadre of conservative allies have in recent years introduced similar pro-Christian bills, including those that directly teach the Bible or display the Ten Commandments in public schools. And conservatives have held up Kirk — who was accused of being a Christian nationalist — as a martyr for the Christian faith.
