At least 50 died in an Israeli airstrike at the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. The IDF confirmed that they launched the airstrike because of the alleged presence of a Hamas commander in the area “hiding” in the camp “within civilians.”
John Kirby, communications coordinator for the National Security Council, was asked by reporters whether this strike “in one of the most densely populated” parts of Gaza mean that Israel “violated the laws of war,” meaning it would be considered a war crime.
Kirby responded immediately, “Can’t say much.” He said it all happened shortly before he came out to the podium and he not have “ a lot of information on that.” When asked again, he shrugged and said “I’m not going to speculate on an incident that I really have no information on. That would be really, really imprudent for me to do.
The White House is under increasing criticism from critics who say its strong support for Israel is creating the conditions for war crimes.
